Google's Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. This makes Gemini the fastest-growing product in the company's history and the 14th Google product to reach the billion-user mark.

The count includes only users who open the Gemini app, visit its web interface, or use Gemini Live. It excludes users who encounter Gemini through integrated features in Gmail, Search, or other Google services. This distinction was noted by Google, which also confirmed that its AI Mode in Search has its own 1 billion monthly active users globally.
Usage patterns show that 63% of Gemini users interact with the assistant via voice input. Among those using Gemini Live, 20% share their camera feed or screen with the AI. Additionally, Gemini generates over 150 million images per day, and 38% of school-related requests include a file or image attachment.
Gemini's reach extends beyond Android: it has more than 100 million active users on iOS, despite requiring a manual download. Gemini chief Josh Woodward highlighted this figure, noting the platform's growth is not limited to Android users.
The milestone follows a rapid rise. Google reported 400 million monthly active Gemini users in May 2025, which grew to 900 million a year later, and surpassed 950 million by late July, ahead of the 1 billion announcement. Company spokesperson Alex Joseph confirmed Gemini reached 1 billion users last week.

The announcement places Gemini in a competitive race with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which also surpassed 1 billion users. OpenAI said on August 6th that more than 1 billion people use ChatGPT, with external data suggesting the threshold was crossed as early as June. OpenAI spokesperson Lindsay McCallum said ChatGPT had hit a billion weekly users in July.
Looking ahead, Google plans to release new study tools for students using Gemini in the coming weeks, and more Gemini-powered features are expected at the Made by Google 2026 event. The Gemini 3.5 Pro model, however, has not yet been released as of the reporting period.
Gemini's growth has not been without challenges. Google's AI infrastructure costs have pushed its operating cash flow into negative territory for the first time in its history, according to internal reports. Additionally, DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis has stepped down from his leadership role, according to company statements.
