Two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will return from injury to compete at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The 25-year-old athlete announced his intention to compete via Instagram on July 27.
Ingebrigtsen has been sidelined with an Achilles issue since the World Championships last September and underwent surgery earlier this year. While his return is confirmed, it has not yet been decided which distances he will run at the championships.
Espen Skoland, a spokesperson for Ingebrigtsen, confirmed the participation to Norway's public broadcaster NRK. Hanne Lyngstad, the sports director for the Norwegian athletics federation, also confirmed to NRK that Ingebrigtsen would compete.
The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham are scheduled to begin on 10 August. NRK suggests that Ingebrigtsen will likely compete only in the 5000m on the opening day.
Career Achievements
Ingebrigtsen is a two-time Olympic champion, having won the 1500m gold at the Tokyo Olympics. He has also secured gold at three consecutive European Championships in the 1500m and 5000m events.
