LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN insider Shams Charania reported. The 76ers were expected to announce the signing on July 27, which they later officially did.
James, 41, announced his decision to join the 76ers on the Friday before July 27. He has spent the last eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, leading them to a title in 2020. He also had two separate stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four years with the Miami Heat, winning championships with all three teams.
James will wear No. 23 with the 76ers, a number he has worn during his career alongside No. 6. The 76ers posted a photo of James' blue jersey hanging in a locker stall with a crown.
LeBron James has won championships with three different teams: two with Miami, one with Cleveland, one with the Lakers.
James seeks to become the first player to win NBA championships with four different teams. He is a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player.
James said he opted to sign with Philadelphia because he felt he could make them a championship team. The 76ers have not won an NBA title in 43 years.
General manager Mike Gansey stated: "LeBron is one of the greatest players to ever play the game."
