LinkedIn is testing a new reporting tool that allows users to flag posts as 'seems like AI slop', according to statements from the company's Chief Product Officer, Hari Srinivasan.
Posts flagged with the tool will see reduced algorithmic reach, similar to users flagging them as 'not interested', a LinkedIn spokesperson said. The flag will also provide a signal to tune LinkedIn's AI models to better identify slop.
LinkedIn is also removing its built-in AI writing feature — previously labeled the 'rewrite with AI' button — and replacing it with a proofreading tool that does not change the user's voice.
Srinivasan said LinkedIn has caught 'hundreds of thousands' of automated comments within the last few months, and blocks 'hundreds of thousands' of automated comment attempts daily. He also stated that LinkedIn blocked between millions and billions of other automated posting attempts in the same period.
The new reporting tool follows an earlier update that aimed to reduce the reach of AI-generated posts. Srinivasan explained that the flag will privately inform the poster via the analytics dashboard that others feel the post may be inauthentic or heavily use AI.
LinkedIn is introducing new classifiers to identify AI-generated slop and expanding access to profile and page verification tools. It is also adding an option to block comments from company pages.
The broader industry is grappling with AI-generated content. Internet infrastructure firm Cloudflare stated that there is now more bot traffic on the web than human-generated requests. Substack has added a tool to help users identify AI-written content, while Digg shut down its Reddit competitor in March, citing an inability to handle bots. Meanwhile, Pangram announced $9 million in new funding to tackle AI content. LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft.
