Mazda sold 3,903 Mazda3 units in North America in July, an 87.5 percent increase compared to the same month last year. The current Mazda3 model, which first debuted at the end of 2018, is on pace to reach nearly 40,000 sales for the year, marking its first time hitting that level since 2021.

Of those July sales, Mazda dealers sold 2,787 Mazda3 sedans and 1,116 hatchbacks. Sedan sales increased by 91.8 percent, while hatchback sales rose by 77.4 percent.

Mazda3 sales in North America compared to July of the previous year

Mazda's overall July sales dropped 13 percent to 39,180 vehicles. This occurred alongside a shift in model performance: total passenger car sales climbed more than 50 percent, while SUV sales fell 18 percent.

SUV sales decline

The Mazda CX-70, a two-row model and twin to the CX-90, saw sales drop 25.8 percent to 1,187 units in July. Through July, the CX-70 had 7,161 units sold, representing a 28.1 percent year-over-year decline.

The Mazda CX-90 also saw a slump of almost 30 percent in July, with 4,831 units sold. Total CX-90 sales through July reached 26,102 units, a 25 percent decrease from the same period last year.

In July, Mazda CX-30 sales grew by almost 10 percent to 4,526 units. However, the CX-30 is down 33 percent for the full year. Mazda previously stated that a drop in CX-30 sales last year was intentional due to limited imports of the Mexican-made model following tariff prices.

Other July model performances included a 26 percent increase for the Mazda CX-50, with more than 76,500 deliveries, and a 16.3 percent drop in Mazda Miata sales.

Company performance and strategy

Mazda returned to profitability in its latest quarter, posting approximately $202.6 million in operating profit from global operations. This reversed a loss from the same period a year ago, which was largely driven by US tariffs.

In the US, Mazda's overall sales through July fell 5.6 percent. This decline reflects a broader industry-wide downturn in light-vehicle sales.

The automaker is preparing a 'number of product enhancements' for its large-platform vehicles.

Jeffrey Guyton also stated that the company plans to boost awareness of the CX-90, CX-70, and the broader large-platform lineup.

Regarding future development, rumors suggest the Mazda3 successor could be an electric replacement based on a Deepal model developed by Mazda's Chinese partner, Changan.
