Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the redesigned 2028 GLA-Class, offering both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. The new GLA is built on the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform and features an 800-volt electrical architecture enabling DC fast charging up to 320 kW.
The fully electric GLA lineup includes three variants: the GLA200 Electric, GLA250+ Electric, and GLA350 4Matic Electric. The GLA200 Electric uses a 58 kWh LFP battery with 221 hp (165 kW), accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 8.1 seconds, with a WLTP range of 245-278 miles (394-447 km). The GLA250+ Electric features a single rear-mounted motor producing 268 hp (200 kW) and an 85 kWh NMC battery, achieving a WLTP range of 359-408 miles (577-657 km). The top-spec GLA350 4Matic Electric adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, delivering 349 hp (260 kW) and 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, with a WLTP range of 345-400 miles (555-643 km).
Mercedes-Benz claims the GLA EV can add up to 168 miles (270 km) of range in 10 minutes of fast charging, though some sources cite 167 miles (267 km). The GLA250+ EV is estimated to have an EPA range of around 350 miles, though other estimates suggest a range in the low 300s based on the CLA.
The hybrid GLA variants use a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 30-hp electric motor integrated into an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. The 48-volt system allows electric driving at city speeds and coasting with the engine off above 60 mph. The hybrid GLA is offered in front-wheel-drive GLA220 and all-wheel-drive GLA250 4Matic trims.
The redesigned GLA measures 179.7 inches (4,565 mm) in length, 73.7 inches (1,873 mm) in width, and 63.1 inches (1,604 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 109.8 inches (2,790 mm) — 2.4 inches longer in wheelbase and 6 inches longer overall than the previous generation. Interior space has improved with 0.3 inches more front legroom, 1.5 inches more rear legroom, and 0.9 inches more headroom.
Inside, the GLA features a standard 14-inch central touchscreen, with an optional MBUX Superscreen adding a 14.0-inch front passenger display. A driver display is also included, reported as either 10.3 or 10.25 inches, while the Superscreen configuration may include a 12.3-inch gauge cluster. The infotainment system incorporates an MBUX Virtual Assistant with Google Gemini and ChatGPT.
Optional features include an illuminated grille with star-shaped LED lighting elements, a panoramic roof with Sky Control that can switch from transparent to opaque, and a 16-speaker Burmester 3D surround sound system. The GLA EV also offers a front trunk (frunk) slightly larger than the one in the CLA.
Mercedes-Benz said: 'The silhouette alone makes it unmistakably clear: the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA is designed to impress.'
The GLA is available in four trim lines: Style Line, Progressive Line, AMG Line, and AMG Line Plus. The GLA EV goes on sale in Europe in summer 2025, with orders opening July 30 in Germany. The US launch is scheduled for the second half of 2027, though some sources anticipate a 2026 arrival.
