The Lunar Development and Test Facility, located at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, US, is being used to prepare hardware for upcoming Artemis missions. Managed by NASA engineers within the Energy Systems Test Area, the facility supports the development and testing of hardware in simulated lunar conditions.
Engineers at the facility are focusing on the challenges posed by lunar dust, which is sharp, abrasive, and clings to surfaces unlike sand on Earth. Without mitigation, this dust could damage spacecraft components, spacesuits, and mechanical joints, while also posing health risks to astronauts.
The facility helps develop and test technologies needed for long-duration lunar exploration.
Simulating the lunar environment
To recreate the harsh lunar environment, the facility utilizes a closed-loop nitrogen system within its vacuum chambers. The site includes a dust containment and preparation laboratory for ambient testing, a 3-foot cube vacuum chamber, and a 15-foot thermal vacuum chamber. The specialized systems enabling these simulations were developed by NASA Johnson's Propulsion and Power Division.
Inside these chambers, engineers use lunar regolith simulant to evaluate the performance of spacesuits, spacecraft components, and mechanisms with moving parts. Mike Salinas, the Propulsion and Power Division branch deputy chief, stated that engineers are also advancing techniques to extract resources from lunar regolith to produce oxygen for astronauts and liquid oxygen for rocket propellant.
