Don Nelson, the second-winningest head coach in NBA history, has died at the age of 86.
The NBA announced the death of Nelson, a US coach who became one of the head coaches with the most wins of all time in the league. His coaching tenure followed a playing career in which he won five championships.
Nelson held 1,335 wins, the second-most in NBA regular-season history after Gregg Popovich.
Championships and Coaching Career
As a player, Nelson won five NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974 and 1976.
He served as a head coach between 1976 and 2010. During his career, he coached the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks.
Accolades and Legacy
Nelson was named NBA Coach of the Year three times. He was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
