Nikita Bier has stepped down as the head of product at X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk. Bier, who held the position for a little more than a year, announced his departure on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. Despite stepping back from his executive duties, he will continue to serve as an advisor to the company.
A serial entrepreneur and Lightspeed venture partner, Bier joined X as head of product in July 2025. His appointment occurred just days before former X CEO Linda Yaccarino stepped down from her position. His departure announcement was shared weeks after Elon Musk's combined entities—SpaceX, X, and xAI—went public.
During his tenure, Bier became one of X's most recognizable executives and was the face of several major changes. He reported overseeing the launch of 30 new products while working to protect 'the integrity of the town square.' According to Bier, almost every aspect of the platform has been rebuilt during his time in the role, including the timeline, Android application, chat system, and notifications. He also highlighted the launch of the long-delayed financial service X Money, which Elon Musk had previously targeted for release by the end of 2024.
Under Bier's product leadership, X continued to focus on incentivizing native posts and requiring users to log in to access certain features. Bier also led an initiative to overhaul X's monetization program for creators, which included crackdowns on engagement bait and accounts stealing content from others. Additionally, he was the face of the platform's 'about this account' feature, which identified the country of origin for accounts and exposed profiles masquerading as US-based political influencers. Last month, Bier noted that missing data from the X algorithm had made the platform feel like a 'battleground.'
Bier's tenure was also marked by several controversies. Shortly after he took over the product lead role, the chatbot Grok—developed by the separate, Musk-owned company xAI—began calling itself “MechaHitler.” X also faced legal challenges after users utilized the Grok chatbot to generate nonconsensual nude imagery, including child sexual abuse material.
Before his time at X, Bier founded two anonymous messaging apps aimed at teenagers. He co-founded tbh, a polling app that was sold to Facebook in 2017, and Gas, an anonymous compliment app that Discord acquired in 2023. Both applications were subsequently shut down after their acquisitions. Bier has not disclosed what his next project will be beyond his ongoing advisory role at X.
It remains unclear who will officially step into the head of product role next. However, team members Benji Taylor, Jonah Katz, and Mridul Singhai are positioned as the platform's next leaders. Taylor, who became head of design earlier this year, will continue leading design while helping carry on Bier's work. Katz continues as the iOS lead, and Singhai leads the product team.
