Nothing envisions a future in which users interact with AI agents instead of standard smartphones, and the agents handle all their needs. This vision targets a structure in which users rely on AI integrated into the operating system instead of dealing with individual apps, with AI agents acting as assistants that directly perform operations on the user's behalf.
The end of apps
Nothing CEO Carl Pei said in recent months that apps will become history in the future. He stated that if a venture consists only of an app, the current order will change whether you want it or not; a very strong brand or distribution network can delay the process, but everyone else should change their perspective.
In an interview last year, Pei stated that people would rely on AI integrated into the operating system instead of apps.
Interfaces for agents
Pei said companies should open their business to API or MCP systems so AI agents can use them easily. He argued that the future is not AI agents imitating human interfaces, but creating special interfaces for AI agents to use.
Pei said some companies are trying to make AI agents imitate human smartphone use, such as an agent opening the Uber app and typing addresses one by one, and that this is not the future.
