OpenAI is launching 'ChatGPT for Academic Researchers,' a program designed to provide free access to its artificial intelligence models for 100,000 academic researchers. The initiative represents a commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research and discovery.
The rollout will begin in summer 2025 with an initial cohort of 10,000 participants. This group includes researchers from institutions such as the Institute for Advanced Study and France's École normale supérieure. The program is scheduled to scale up to reach the full capacity of 100,000 participants by 2027.
Access and technical specifications
Participants will gain access to OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model. Each researcher receives a year of access roughly equivalent to the $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro account. To facilitate collaboration, each participant can invite four colleagues from their academic institution to join the program.
The program targets researchers across scientific and mathematical fields, including biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics. OpenAI states that researchers' data will not be used to train its models, addressing a common concern regarding proprietary AI systems.
Existing tools and ongoing debates
This launch follows the introduction of Prism in January 2025, an AI-powered tool for working with scientific journals and documents that is available to anyone with a ChatGPT account. OpenAI also continues to offer ChatGPT Edu for schools.
The new program does not address researchers' requests for access to model weights and training data. OpenAI and Anthropic maintain that restricting access to model weights helps prevent misuse. However, researchers have argued that limited access can hamper independent evaluations of model behavior, reproducibility, and safety.
