PJT Partners Inc. achieved record results for the second quarter and the first half of the year. The firm described its performance as an 'alpha play' on strategic advisory investments, noting that these investments have transformed its scale and scope.

Restructuring performance reached record levels, driven by sustained demand for liability management. Companies are currently navigating high leverage, financing costs, and technological dislocation. Management stated that restructuring activity will remain elevated for the foreseeable future due to normalized interest rates and proactive liability management by private equity owners.

Strategic Advisory and Park Hill Performance

Strategic Advisory growth was fueled by a constructive but volatile deal environment. Mandate counts increased more than 20% year-over-year to record levels. PJT Park Hill benefited from significant growth in private capital solutions (PCS), which more than offset declines in the primary fundraising market.

The firm reported $35 million in revenue pull-forwards across eight transactions in the second quarter. This represents a $14 million increase compared to the prior year.

Outlook and Expenses

Full-year revenue growth is expected to be lower than the 24% achieved in the first half. However, all business segments are on track for record annual performance. This outlook assumes a steady improvement in the M&A market as volatility recedes.

Non-compensation expense growth of approximately 14% is projected for the year. This growth is driven by higher travel, professional fees, and continued investments in AI and technology infrastructure. Non-compensation costs as a percentage of revenue remain efficient at approximately 12.5%, despite 'step-function' investments in occupancy and cybersecurity.

Management attributes margin expansion to top-line growth and disciplined cost management. The firm remains committed to delivering operating leverage by growing the top line while being responsible with the cost structure.

Leadership Changes and Global Expansion

CFO Helen Meates is stepping down on October 1. Arun Kalra, the current Director of Finance, will succeed her as CFO.

The firm has expanded its global office footprint in New York, US and London, UK. Higher occupancy costs and depreciation expense are expected in the near term due to this expansion. Management noted that the firm is not yet at a 'steady state' of productivity, as network effects and brand awareness continue to build beyond just time-in-seat.

Geopolitical tensions and AI-related uncertainties are key drivers of market volatility, impacting the stop-start cadence of M&A activity. However, AI is expected to be a net positive for deal flow as it forces companies to rethink competitive positions, leading to more take-privates, strategic pivots, and data center financings.

The addressable market is expanding through geographic growth and deeper relationships with private equity firms, which are repeat consumers of these services. Achieving critical mass in specific regions and initiatives is still in early stages, suggesting further upside to partner productivity.
