Roberto Mancini has been appointed as Italy's national football team coach for a second time, replacing Gennaro Gattuso who left in April following a World Cup qualifying defeat by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
FIGC President Giovanni Malago announced the appointment during a Federal Council meeting, stating: "Mancini is the coach."
The 61-year-old Mancini previously guided Italy to the European Championship title in 2021 (Euro 2020). During his first spell, he led Italy in 58 matches. However, his tenure also included Italy's failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
At club level, Mancini managed Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and Manchester City, guiding Manchester City to their first Premier League title in 2011-12.
The appointment comes amid changes at the FIGC. Former technical director Paolo Maldini and adviser Leonardo resigned on Monday after Andrea Pirlo's appointment was blocked due to his ties to Russian betting firm Fonbet. Pep Guardiola, the FIGC's first choice, turned down the job this month. Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as the new technical director of FIGC.
Mancini's first spell as Italy coach lasted from May 2018 to August 2023. He resigned in August 2023 and took over Saudi Arabia's national team two weeks later.
The Italy team announced Mancini's appointment on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
