Spotify announced on Tuesday that the Swedish streaming service will introduce a new labeling system to identify artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities rather than real people. The initiative, featuring an 'AI Persona' badge, is intended to meet user demand for transparency regarding whether an artist profile represents a human being or a digital character.

The 'AI Persona' badge will appear on artist profile banners, within 'About' sections, in search results, and on track listings within playlists. When users click on the badge, they will be able to see whether the artist disclosed their AI status voluntarily or if Spotify made the determination following an investigation.

Recommendation and identification protocols

Under the new system, Spotify will exclude music from 'AI Personas' from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. However, music from these profiles will appear in personalized recommendations if a user explicitly follows the artist.

To identify these accounts, Spotify will use a combination of human review and AI investigative tools to analyze elements such as an artist's name and image. The company will apply a 'Likely AI Persona' badge to profiles suspected of representing photorealistic AI-generated identities until a final determination is reached. Artists flagged by this review process will be notified and granted the right to either confirm the status via self-disclosure or file an objection.

Starting August 11, 2026, artists can self-disclose their AI status through the Spotify for Artists portal. The rollout of these 'AI Persona' labels is scheduled to begin in mid-September 2026.

Identity vs. production

Spotify clarified that the 'AI Persona' label pertains to an artist's public identity rather than how the music itself was created. The platform currently provides features such as 'AI Credits' and 'SongDNA' to allow musicians to be transparent about the specific AI tools used during music production.

The move follows broader industry shifts regarding synthetic content. The French streaming service Deezer reported that it detected 13.4 million AI-generated songs last year, noting that approximately 90,000 daily uploads are AI-generated. Additionally, the US rock band Velvet Sundown, a synthetic music project, has reached 117,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

Spotify's current policies include a filter against AI spam and measures to ban unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes. The company also maintains 'Verified by Spotify' badges to indicate that an artist is a real person, with hundreds of thousands of profiles already verified; Spotify expects that more than 99% of artists actively searched by users will be verified once the full system is implemented.
