At the Canadian Open WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, Canada, seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek and ninth-seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina were the first to reach the semifinals.
Swiatek powers past Shnaider
Polish six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek beat Russia's Diana Shnaider, ranked 17th in the WTA, 6–2, 6–1 in the quarterfinal. The match lasted one hour and four minutes.
Swiatek won 88 percent of points on her first serve, while Shnaider won 45 percent of points on her own serve. She did not face a single break point in Monday's match.

Svitolina battles through
World No.9 Elina Svitolina beat Russia's 16th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova 3–6, 6–0, 6–3 in one hour and 34 minutes. Svitolina led the deciding set 5–1, allowed Alexandrova to break, then broke back to love and won the match.
