Four mathematicians received the Fields Medal at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia. The winners include Wang Hong, Deng Yu, John Pardon, and Jacob Tsimerman.

Wang Hong and Deng Yu are the first Chinese nationals to win the Fields Medal. In addition, Wang Hong is the third woman ever to receive the award.

2 Chinese mathematicians in one year

Two Chinese mathematicians won the Fields Medal in the same year, a first for the country.

For the first time, China produced Fields Medal winners educated entirely on its own soil. The Fields Medal is awarded to mathematicians under the age of 40 and is given once every four years.
