Dave W. Plummer, the original developer behind Windows Task Manager, has created a similar app for Apple's macOS called TMOG, offering it as an alternative to Apple's Activity Monitor.
TMOG adopts the design of Windows' Task Manager, allowing detailed examination of CPU usage, per-core load, RAM/SSD/GPU/network usage, and available temperature data. It also enables setting startup programs.
TMOG is currently offered for free, with a paid 'Pro' version possibly coming in the future.
The first taste is always free.
Plummer is also developing a Windows version of TMOG. He said the macOS utility is currently in beta. There is conflicting information about its availability: Plummer tweeted on July 31, 2026 that the macOS version was immediately available, while Tom's Hardware reported it had not been released at the time of its writing.
Plummer, who was the original developer behind Windows Task Manager, which debuted as an 80KB accessory, recently reimagined it in a retro-futuristic Atari Tempest remix.
The Mac project is written in Swift and uses no original code. Plummer said Microsoft sent him the source code to XP Task Manager along with permission to share or demo it, but he has no post-Windows XP code to tap into.
He is currently working on drive meter activity coding, describing the resulting visuals as coming from 'drawing instantaneous drive activity at 60fps.' Plummer has acknowledged he may get bored with the utility and release the source for others to continue.
