A study published in The Lancet estimated that there is a global burden of approximately 6.5 million invasive fungal infections occurring annually. This research provided what senior authors described as the first estimate of its kind regarding the scale of these infections.
The findings indicated that these infections result in an estimated 3.8 million deaths each year. These figures were established as there are currently no other aggregated global estimates for fungal disease incidence and mortality.
