The African Development Bank (AfDB) chief for climate change and green growth warned that a forthcoming 'super' El Niño is expected to cause significant economic damage across the continent. The impact from this weather pattern could hit affected African countries with an estimated total of US$10 billion to US$20 billion.
Anthony Nyong, who holds the position at the AfDB, noted that the event is likely to trigger mass migration from regions severely impacted by the weather conditions. He emphasized that this damage is not expected to be a one-off occurrence.
Forecasters indicate that the El Niño pattern could become among the strongest ever recorded if current warming trends in the Pacific Ocean continue. This projection marks the first time a major multilateral development bank has provided an estimate regarding the economic impact of El Niño.
