The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) published its short-term energy outlook on Tuesday.
The agency projected that US electricity demand will rise from a previous peak of 4,195 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2025 to 4,268 TWh in 2026 and 4,391 TWh in 2027.

The AI boom and ongoing electrification are driving US electricity consumption to new record levels in the coming years. Data centers for AI and cryptocurrencies are driving electricity demand particularly strongly.
Texas Forecast Revised
The EIA significantly lowered its electricity demand forecast for Texas for 2027. Electricity demand in Texas is now expected to grow by only 6 percent, after a previous forecast of 14 percent growth.
Demand for electricity in Texas is expected to grow at a far slower pace after the Texas governor imposed a pause on new data center projects. The Texas governor imposed a construction pause on new data centers in early August.
The pause on new data center projects in Texas is the reason for the lowered electricity demand forecast for the state.
