Elon Musk suggested a potential overlap between Tesla and SpaceX during Tesla’s Q2 2026 earnings call, citing a growing connection between the two entities.
Musk stated there is “more and more overlap” between Tesla and SpaceX, though he noted that any discussions regarding the combination of the companies must be conducted through “the appropriate process”.
Tesla general counsel Brandon Ehrhart said the companies have numerous beneficial transactions and strengthened their relationship earlier this year through an investment and a framework agreement.
According to SpaceX’s S-1 filing, Tesla and SpaceX have agreed to a general framework for the future development of Terafab, with specific projects remaining subject to separate negotiations.
Financial and operational integration
SpaceX's S-1 filing also disclosed that SpaceX and xAI entities purchased approximately $650 million in goods and services from Tesla in 2025.
Musk mentioned that Starlink is being integrated into the Cybercab and will be integrated into all Tesla vehicles in markets where Starlink is active.
Tesla reported $1.1 billion in GAAP net income for the quarter, with approximately $750 million of that total originating from a mark-to-market gain on its SpaceX stake.
Tesla's actual income from operations was $398 million, resulting in a 1.4% operating margin.
