The Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (SBM) has announced the compulsory traffic insurance premium rates for the August 2026 period. The new tariff affects approximately 34 million vehicle owners in Türkiye.
Reports on premium increases vary. Some sources indicate a 1.5% increase for general groups and 3.5% for taxis and buses, while other reports state an average increase of approximately 4% compared to the previous month.
Risk levels and premium variations
Insurance premiums are determined by risk steps. Drivers in the 0th step, considered the most risky group, are reported to face a 200 percent surcharge on their premiums. To be placed in the 0th step, a driver reportedly must have three or more culpable traffic accidents within a year while in the 1st step, and insurance compensation reportedly must be paid.
The price difference between the 0th step and the 8th step, which represents the least risky drivers, is reported to be approximately 500 percent.
Regional premium breakdown
In İstanbul, the maximum premium for an automobile in the 0th step is 57,213 TL, while the premium for an automobile in the 8th step is 9,535 TL. A driver insuring a vehicle from the standard 4th step in İstanbul faces a policy fee of 19,071 TL.
For larger vehicles in İstanbul, the maximum compulsory traffic insurance premium for a bus with 31 or more seats in the 0th step is 408,348 TL, whereas the 8th step premium is 68,058 TL.
According to unverified reports, in Ankara, automobile premiums range from a maximum of 55,594 TL to a minimum of 9,266 TL. In İzmir, automobile premiums range from a maximum of 53,974 TL to a minimum of 8,996 TL.
Taxi insurance rates
According to unverified reports, taxi insurance premiums in İstanbul range from a maximum of 166,214 TL to a minimum of 27,702 TL.
According to unverified reports, in Ankara, the maximum taxi insurance premium is 161,510 TL, with a minimum of 26,918 TL. In İzmir, the maximum taxi insurance premium is 156,806 TL, with a minimum of 26,134 TL.
Penalties and surcharges
Drivers operating without compulsory traffic insurance face an administrative fine of 1,246 TL under the 2026 tariff and their vehicle is prohibited from traffic until the deficiency is rectified.
If an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, the fine reportedly increases to 2,039 TL and all material damage liability reportedly belongs to the driver.
A 5 percent delay surcharge is added to the policy premium for every 30 days of delay in renewal, up to a maximum of 50 percent.
