Russia has added Moscow, the Moscow Region, and parts of the Kursk Region to its cryptocurrency mining ban list.
The ban in Moscow is scheduled to take effect on Aug. 15, 2026, and remain in effect through Dec. 31, 2032. In the Kursk Region, the restrictions cover the city of Lgov and eight municipal districts.
Resolution No. 936 was signed by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, 2026. According to records published on Pravo.ru, this resolution amends a previous mining restriction order issued in December 2024.
Energy concerns and data center capacity
The Moscow Region's Energy Ministry stated that a mining ban was necessary due to growing electricity demand, according to TASS. Regional energy officials estimated that cryptocurrency mining consumes 1 GW of power.

The Energy Ministry also estimated that 19 data centers in the Moscow Region have 233 MW of capacity.
Additionally, a cryptocurrency mining ban in parts of Buryatia and the Zabaykalsky Krai is set to run from April 1, 2026, through March 15, 2031.
