United Airlines approached Delta Air Lines last year to discuss a potential merger between the two major U.S. carriers.
United CEO Scott Kirby contacted Delta CEO Ed Bastian to pitch the tie-up, which would have combined two of the largest airlines in the United States.
Despite initial discussions, talks with Delta did not advance. A United spokesperson told FOX Business the airline had 'nothing to share,' while Delta declined to comment.
The Wall Street Journal reported that a merger between United and Delta would have had sweeping implications and likely faced antitrust scrutiny.
Alternative Negotiations with American Airlines
Earlier this year, Scott Kirby also explored a merger with American Airlines. However, American Airlines rejected the proposal.
Scott Kirby stated that he believes consolidation is unlikely for United. The airline remains open to acquiring assets such as airport slots and gates, though a major consolidation deal is currently seen as unlikely.
