Adenauer & Co, a fashion chain founded by Andreas Adenauer, the grandson of former German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, has filed for insolvency.
Insolvency proceedings were opened at the Düsseldorf local court on the grounds of illiquidity and over-indebtedness. The company, which is headquartered in Kaarst near Düsseldorf, Germany, has been granted self-administration proceedings. Lawyer Holger Rhode has been appointed as the custodian for the proceedings.
The fashion chain specializes in maritime-themed casual leisurewear, including blouses, T-shirts, and hoodies. Its stores, known to holidaymakers as 'Strandhäuser' (beach houses), have been located on islands such as Juist, Fehmarn, and Föhr.
According to founder Andreas Adenauer, the company's issues stem from criminal activity rather than its retail offerings. Speaking to Wirtschaftswoche, Adenauer stated, 'Our problem is not the product. We had a fraud problem.' He further told the publication that funds were embezzled and that he was misled with falsified figures at a location in Turkey.

The scale of the company's operations is subject to conflicting reports regarding the number of stores; some sources state Adenauer & Co operated more than 45 stores in Germany, Austria, and Spain, while others report more than 50. The company employed more than 200 people.
Restructuring and future outlook
The insolvency filings include one concerning Adenauer Holding GmbH, as part of a total of five proceedings published on the Insolvenzbekanntmachungen portal. While store closures are expected to follow during the insolvency proceedings, Andreas Adenauer expressed belief in the continued operation of the business.
Wirtschaftswoche reported on the insolvency prior to the official portal announcements, noting that restructuring measures are expected to be completed by October. Additionally, several investor groups have reportedly shown interest in taking a stake in Adenauer & Co.
