Bayer and plaintiffs' lawyers have requested a postponement of the hearing for the final approval of their multi-billion dollar class-action settlement regarding the herbicide glyphosate.
The parties filed a joint application to a court in the US state of Missouri to move the hearing to September 10 or a later date. The hearing was originally scheduled for August 19.
Legal Context and Previous Rulings
The US Supreme Court decided at the end of June that plaintiffs cannot sue Bayer over the absence of a cancer warning on the label of the glyphosate-containing herbicide Roundup. This follows classification by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which designated glyphosate as non-carcinogenic and approved labels without a corresponding warning.
While the Supreme Court ruling addressed labeling, jury courts in individual US states have repeatedly convicted Bayer to pay high damages.
Bayer, a company based in Leverkusen, Germany, expects a decision regarding the settlement in 2026.
